Shilajit

A True Wonder Of Nature

The Ayurvedic Adaptogen for Men and Women

Most people whom you meet might have never heard of shilajit, which is really of no surprise since it’s popularity in the West has just begun to peak through. Shilajit is an ancient herbal substance that is sticky and tar like in form, which forms in the high altitude mountain ranges, from 14,000 to 18,000 ft, such as the Himalayas and Altai mountains in Asia. Shilajit is rising through conventional cultures, outside of it’s endemic range, and this rise is attributed to none other than it’s ability to balance and heal the body. It has been used traditionally for thousands of years and in different cultures and practices such as in  Ayurveda, the traditional systems based healing practice in India, to treat an innumerous amount of diseases and discomforts. In Ayurveda, it is believed that it forms a core part of most remedies used in the practice and was said to be able to treat every curable ailment ever known.

Shilajit Supports:

Through millions and millions of years, plants and organic matter have become trapped by layers of rock in these mountainous regions.  As time passes, the pressure from the weight of the mountains and the extreme temperature changes of the Himalayas causes the plants to be transformed into a rich mineral mass that flows out of the rocks. The mountain ranges where Shilajit forms are unique in their conditions. Higher altitudes provide sharp changes in temperature, reduced oxygen content, dramatic windspeed, increased radiation and less microbial activity, all of which play a role in the formation of this wonder. When rain, melted snow or atmospheric moisture condenses on mountain slopes it passes through the soil and through layers of organic matter, extracting with it many beneficial organic compounds that were created through the harsh environmental conditions and natural complex processes. Eventually, this liquid ends up inside caves or crevices, evaporating, and leaving behind a blackish, brown crust, rich in trace minerals, this is Shilajit.

Shilajit has been used for thousands of years, but only recently has it been the subject of  scientific scrutiny to determine both it’s safety and efficacy.

The Truth About Supplements

Purchasing supplements can always feel like a storm of unknown experimentation packed in small tiny tablets or capsules. Whether it’s purchasing them from a store shelf or online, being precautious should always be of number one priority.

The supplements market has grown tremendously through out the years, and with it so has the demand for shilajit. Due to the fact that counterfeits do exist, scientifically validated supplement products are of course desirable, if you know what you’re looking for.

The truth is that tainted and untested products are being made available to the public without the proper kind of transparency. Here at The Garden in the Jungle, we want to assist those spectators interested in regaining their vitality using the power of nature, by presenting to them some of the best and most transparent manufacturers available online.

Shilajit can be a very confusing topic if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Browsing the web you might come to find that there seems to be different forms of Shilajit, but how do they differ? In actuality, there are multiple answers to this question depending on your unique needs, where you source it from, which culture’s perspective you adopt and the methods that were used to process it from its raw form. The Garden In The Jungle provides for the public a source of shilajit, in varying forms, some of which can be considered the most beneficial kinds of shilajit, if adequately processed.

Shilajit in Clinical Studies

Therapeutic Potential of Fulvic Acid in Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Group-73.png

Shilajit is known to contain a number of essential macro minerals as well as trace minerals. It is very similar to the humic substances found in soil as it is comprised of 60-80% humus. In agricultural and gardening the term humus is sometimes used to describe well aged compost. This term is used to describe an upper layer of soil, the finely divided organic matter in soil, derived from microbial decomposition of plant and animal substances. The humic substances found in Shilajit; humins, fulvic acids and humic acids, have demonstrated to show effective results in treating certain chronic diseases and in assisting the body as protective health components.

Fulvic Acid

Fulvic acid is a subclass of diverse compounds known as humic substances, which are the by product of organic degradation from microorganisms, and that is a constituent of Shilajit. What separates fulvic acids from other humic substances is a set of physical and chemical properties that seem to emphasize it’s effective properties. The most adequately researched claim of fulvic acid is it’s ability to modulate the immune system. Asthma, allergies, eczema and many other disorders can be associated with overreactive immune cells. In such cases, standard procedure would be the prescription of anti- inflammatory drugs critical for reducing symptoms. A couple of studies show that Fulvic acid can act as an anti- inflammatory by reducing the release of pro- inflammatory mediators from cells. Fulvic acid has shown to reduce tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) expression in different human monocytes, a type of white blood cell. It has also shown to reduce cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) secretion in primary human monocytes. Cyclooxygenase 2 is an enzyme that acts to speed up the production of certain chemical messengers called prostaglandins that play a key role in promoting inflammation. Prostaglandin E2 is a product of cyclooxygenase, being one of the most typical lipid mediators produced from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase and acts on four kinds of receptor subtypes to elicit its diverse actions including pyrexia, pain sensation, and inflammation.

Antioxidant Capabilities:

Fulvic acid has shown promising effects in reducing oxidative stress. A study conducted on isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial damaged rats showed that feeding the animals 300mg/kg/day for 4 weeks decreased lipid peroxidation and myocardial damage markers after ISO treatment. Myocardial pertains to the tissue of the heart. Lipid peroxidation is the oxidative degradation of lipids. It is the process in which free radicals steal electrons from the lipids in cell membranes that results in cellular damage. Antioxidants like fulvic acid assertively scavenge for free radicals and neutralize them, assisting cell development and functioning and in protecting many parts and organs in our body.

Gut Health:

An extremely important factor in overall health and development is definitely your gut health. In certain cultures and belief systems the gut is considered the first brain due to the now validated fact that the gut microbiome communicates directly with the neural system, as well as with the other systems in the body that determine health and immunity. Sufficient evidence shows that poor gut health can lead to inflammation and disease. In the practice of agriculture, fulvic acid has shown to influence the soil microbiome composition and is able to come together and conjugate itself to many minerals, aiding in the uptake in plants and assisting them in their health. As a result, fulvic acid is suggested to enhance the gut flora, assist nutrient absorption and the healing of adverse disorders related to the gut. In animal studies, fulvic acid has shown to increase the activity of digestive enzymes such as lysozyme and proteases. Fulvic acid has shown influence in the bioavailability of heavy metals in rat models as well.

Clinical evaluation of purified Shilajit on testosterone levels in healthy volunteers

Testosterone is an important sex hormone for both men and women, and many interacting factors can tip the production of it off balance. When imbalance does occur, it brings with it symptoms such as a reduced sex drive, increased general body inflammation and mood swings. A long touted affect of shilajit is it’s ability to restore libido, the sexual drive of an individual, and improve the functionality and development of the reproductive organs in general.

Traditional uses of Shilajit primarily focus not only on diabetes and diseases of the urinary tract, but also on edema, tumors, muscle wasting, epilepsy and even insanity. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is often employed for the management of male reproductive disorders, and in particular, under the parlance of Vrisya, an aphrodisiac with special reference to spermatogenesis. Several toxicological studies, both acute and grand, have already been performed by many scientists with Shilajit throughout the world. Shilajit was proved to be safe at doses of 0.2–1.0 g per kg body weight when used chronically.

In a study conducted on 75 healthy volunteers aged between 45 and 55, purified shilajit was used to evaluate the effects and relation between purified shilajit and testosterone production. This randomized double blind placebo controlled clinical study grouped volunteers into two groups, placebo and purified shilajit (PS). Both groups  received respective doses of 250 mg capsules orally, twice daily after major meals, for a total duration of 90 days. Both total and free testosterones, LH, FSH and DHEA’s were estimated from fasting blood samples taken from each volunteer on days 0 (baseline), 30, 60 and 90. LH and FSH are inter‐related hormones which have important roles in the synthesis and release of testosterone. DHEA is the precursor of testosterone meaning that it is converted into testosterone inside of the body. As a result, It was observed that in the PS treated group, there was an increase in testosterone levels on days 30 (6.82%), 60 (3.09%) and 90 (20.45%) with respect to day 0. It was observed that there was maintenance of LH level in the PS treated group, while FSH levels significantly increased in the PS treated group on days 30, 60 and 90. DHEA levels also showed interesting results with PS, where the level of DHEA gradually increased on day 30 (9.14%), 60 (9.59%) and 90 (31.35%) with respect to values on day 0, while change of DHEA in the placebo group was irregular.

Effect of Shilajit on Blood Glucose Levels and Lipid Profile in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats

Diabetes is a major public health concern in both developed and developing countries. According to The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, in 2015, 30.3 million people in the U.S. suffered from the disease, with 1 in 4 of those people not even knowing that they had the disease.  Today, it is ranked amongst the top ten leading causes of death in the United States.

Diabetes is a disease related to the inability of an individual to regulate blood glucose or sugar, properly. It can be said that diabetes is caused by insulin insufficiently, either absolutely or relatively. When ever we eat anything, any carbohydrates that we ingest get broken down into glucose within the body. When glucose becomes present, a signaling stimulates the pancreas, an organ of the Digestive and Endocrine Systems that is located in the abdomen behind the stomach. The pancreas is signaled to produce a hormone called insulin which plays a key role in blood glucose regulation. As glucose fills the blood stream, the insulin that is being produced by the pancreas acts like a key upon the cells, signaling them as receptors to allow and receive in the glucose present in the blood stream. Glucose is the most commonly utilized source of energy for our cells and if gone unregulated it can cause problems for both the bloodstream and cells. The inability of the cells to use insulin properly and efficiently eventually leads to hyperglycemia, an abnormal presence of high concentrations of glucose in the bloodstream. This eventually effects the fat tissues and cells of muscles ,leading to insulin resistance.

Shilajit has shown through clinical studies to lower blood glucose levels and to improve the lipid profile in diabetic rats.  A study conducted on alloxan induced diabetic albino rats, whom were fed different doses of purified shilajit, showed how the effects of shilajit may help assist blood glucose regulation in diabetic individuals. The study consisted of different groups with six animals in each group. One group received a single dose of alloxan monohydrate, a diabetogenic agent used to induce diabetes mellitus in the rats, while the other group received a dose of shilajit. Only those with blood glucose levels greater than or equal to 150 mg/dl were included in the study. These rats were then further divided into various groups as follows; group one severed as diabetic control, while groups two, three and four were treated with three different doses of shilajit (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg/day). Groups five and six were treated with glibenclamide and shilajit, and groups seven and eight were given metformin with shilajit. Glibenclamide and Metformin are both conventional medications used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. They were included in the study to see if shilajit had any effect on their their mechanisms of action. Blood glucose levels were measured before starting the treatment (day 0) and weekly thereafter up to the end of the treatment period. Total cholesterol (TCh), triglyceride (TG) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were measured on day 0 and after the completion of the treatment period at the end of the fourth week. As an end result, a steady decrease in the  body weight was observed in the alloxan treated rats which seemed to be significant after the 2nd week of treatment. A significant reduction in the blood glucose level was observed at the end of the 2nd week of treatment with shilajit, which remained persistent up to four weeks of the treatment period. Moreover, a significant reduction in the level of total cholesterol and triglyceride, with significant increase in the level of HDL was noted at the end of the four week period. Treatment with all three doses of shilajit produced a significant reduction in blood glucose levels, with maximum reduction being achieved with the dose of 100 mg/kg.

Both combinations of Glibenclamide and Metformin with shilajit showed significant improvement in their ability to lower blood glucose levels. Both combinations also showed great improvement in the lipid profile of the animals.

Shilajit is without a doubt a marvelous, healthful, natural phenomenon. But is all Shilajit the same?

If you were to go out on a search for the best kind of shilajit, where would you begin? The Himalayan mountains might be a good place. Sourcing is a very important factor when it comes to quality shilajit. If the producer cannot tell you where he sources his product from, judgment of character should be on alert. Apart form sourcing, the kind of purification method used is equally important to take into consideration.

It is believed that any of the different kinds of forms of shilajit can act potentially potent and beneficial if properly purified. Although there might be some truth to this, there is a very small number of manufacturers that can actually back up the claim that their shilajit product is genuine and safe.  Due to the risk of purchasing and ingesting a faulty product, most if not many shilajit consumers would agree that the shilajit resin form would be the most desirable, being that this form holds traditional and generational anecdotal usage that spans back thousands of years in the endemic regions where shilajit forms. But nevertheless, shilajit forms range from soft resin, to liquid, to powdered.

Authentic raw shilajit resin is quite a sacred product to the indigenous people of India. So sacred that even to certain yogi individuals in the native ranges of India it is a rare delicacy that can be difficult to find. It is commonly believed that there are different grades of shilajit. Different parts of the world have different patterns of rocks and different mountain ranges differ in rock patterns and formations based off of altitude. This is important in identify the grading system. Varying grades of shilajit have changing levels of beneficial values. There are four different grades of shilajit that differ by reference of the color of the rock that it was derived from. When any of the four grades of shilajit are purified, the end result will be a dark brown sticky resin. The grades range as follows:

  • Gold and Red Rock ( Highest Grade of Shilajit)
  • Yellow Rocks
  • Grey Rocks
  • Brown Rocks

The golden grade is widely believed to have the most and best kind of benefits.

Lotus Blooming Herbs

Lotus Blooming Herbs is a business based in Los Angeles, with the primary purpose in mind of providing the public with authentic, 100% pure Gold Grade Shilajit. They have shown themselves to be one of the best and most trustworthy producers of genuine Himalayan Shilajit resin. Founded by an Ayurvedic practitioner with a very inspiring life story, they have literally traveled through some of the highest altitudes and most remote mountain villages on Earth, in search for genuine shilajit. They personally source their shilajit from a remote Himalayan region of India near the Tibetan border, from a high mountain valley that is considered sacred by the indigenous people who live there. They have partnered with native Ayurvedic doctors and villagers who have been hand collecting raw shilajit from this region for centuries, and who have learned through centuries of practice and generational knowledge that has been passed down, how to identify genuine raw pure gold grade shilajit.

The Purification Process

Shilajit can be seen glistening on the steep rocky cliffs in the summer months of the year. Before it can be purified, first the rocks containing shilajit are broken up and then soaked in pure mountain spring water. Shilajit is soluble in water, and as it soaks in the spring water it slowly begins to dissolve into the water, where the sediment is then filtered out for further purification. The liquid is then put out onto the sun to evaporate the water content. This process is repeated seven times until the Shilajit is in it’s purest form. For the final step, the Shilajit is then heated to remove any remaining moisture and to destroy any possible microbes and spores that may be present. It’s nutritive content such as the fulvic acid and minerals are not damaged by this heating process. This is the Tibetan process of purifying Shilajit believed to compose the purest resin, and it is the method preferred by Lotus Blooming Herbs.

Due to the high altitude and short harvesting period, the Shilajit from where they source their product from is extremely rare. The pure Himalayan Shilajit from this particular region and altitude is highly prized by Ayurvedic practitioners and is considered to posses great healing powers.

Directly From The Source

One thing that makes Lotus Blooming Herbs an incredibly trustworthy producer is their decision of sourcing their shilajit directly from the highest and most sacred ranges of the Himalayan mountains. They may not be the only manufacturer of shilajit sourced directly from the Himalayas, but they sure have shown transparency unlike any other. Unlike many other nutritional companies who prefer to order raw material through international wholesalers, they prefer to personally source their ingredients from the source. Lotus Blooming Herbs has partnered with native villagers, specifically with a family that has used and collected shilajit from these regions for hundreds of years. Experts in grading and purification techniques. We are very happy to include that their partnership is established under rules of fair compensation for the villagers and pure golden grade shilajit for the business. These rules of fair trade have allowed for economic abundance for this village and great respect being given in both direction, creating a happy and ongoing relationship.

This standardized extract of shilajit is a patented ingredient, protected by multiple US and international patents. Patents are a property right granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office anytime during the development of a “drug”, in this case a nutraceutical substance. It is an exclusive right to use an invention or process that is granted by the government to the inventor. Patent rights are exclusive rights. They give the owner the right to exclude others from making, selling or using the content claimed in the patent. Due to this patent, it has become nearly impossible to obtain certain information for transparency from the manufacturer’s side, such as the purification process, but we will provide all that was made available to us from the producer Choq.

FAQ

Choq boasts diligence in finding the best natural ingredients. Their products contain some of the best and most scientifically researched formulations, without any fillers, additives or excipients.

On their search for the best scientifically validated shilajit on the market, they came across PrimaVie Purified Shilajit. PrimaVie is a high quality, clinically studied, purified shilajit derived from the Himalayas. Manufactured by Natreon, a global leader of nutraceutical products who has been focused on researching, developing and marketing Ayurvedic based active ingredients, and which are backed by extensive clinical and preclinical research, safety studies, a high degree of purity and robust standardization. Since 1998, they have intended to develop intellectual property for the benefit of themselves and their consumers.

Flawlessness is a rarity in the world of today, and supplement companies are no exception. With the rapid growth and constant seeking of natural supplementation going on right now, safe and ethical methods of production and manufacturing are, for the most part, desirable. Choq has done their due diligence in determining one the safest and most effective Shilajit capsules available on the market, PrimaVie Purified Shilajit. Choq Shilajit is; lab verified to contain exceptionally low levels of heavy metals, extensively clinically researched, water purified and free of solvents, Kosher and Halal Certified, 100% vegan ( as are all Choq products) and is protected by multiple US and International patents.

Lots of product manufacturers like to promote their products as containing natural, quality ingredients that are usually trendy and easily marketable. Fairy dusting is when a product manufacturer willingly includes subthreshold doses into a proprietary blend of lots of other ingredients, all fluff and no substance. This is a very common strategy amongst producers because truly, with sales occurring it maximizes profits. A very shameful but very real strategy that Choq products do not undergo.

Binders, Fillers, flow agents, these additives plus more are constantly being used in the supplements industry to save a couple of pennies on the manufacturers side of things, but are continually damaging and distorting the same vitality and vigor that these supplements are suppose to be assisting. If a company is using capsules made of animal by- products, contain starch, wheat, dairy or any other kind of preservative, the contradiction of resurgence remains.

The topic of synthetic nutrients is an entire discussion of itself. It is misleading, misdirecting, damaging and most of all, cheap. The synthetic nutrients that can be found in almost anything and everything at our local grocery stores are often the ones that chemists learned how to synthesize almost 100 years ago, and that are still being widely used today. These “madman” creations are no where near as potent and effective as the molecules found living in nature, where their bioavailability can take it’s appropriate form.

Sourcing and Purifying

Choq Shilajit is harvested from the Himalayan mountains, where according to the owner, the locals are associated with the Choq staff, and therefore harvest the shilajit themselves. We were notified that Choq shilajit is extracted from  rocks that vary in color, so  golden grade shilajit may not be the wholesome product. But despite the the fact that it may not be entirely golden grade shilajit, Choq boasts a heavy load of clinical studies and scientific research that back the claim made, that PrimaVie Purified Shilajit is the most scientifically researched shilajit on the market today, guaranteed to bring safety and efficacy.

Choq can be considered the best of both worlds. The natural world in conjunction with the scientific world. For some, all natural wholesome alternatives of medicine, like that of wildcrafted herbs, may not always be the best option. It is completely understandable how certain individuals experience skepticism and would rather prefer indisputable safety instead of anecdotal and generational tribal wisdom. Choq provides exactly that for those looking to better their health. A part of assuring that their consumers are getting nothing but the safest and most potent ingredients available is their method of purification when it comes to purifying shilajit. Being that this ingredient is patent protected, the purification process used does not seem to be readily available for disclosure. What we did receive from company staff is that once extracted from the rocks, the shilajit then undergoes a patented, hot water purification process, which helps to remove any impurities. The water is then evaporated, leaving behind the tar like resin known as shilajit. They then use a freeze drying method to turn the resin into a powder state. Choq’s lab tests boast a 50% fulvic acid content, some of the highest on the market, which is the main bioactive compound responsible for Shilajit benefits. Also, with the standardization and purification process used, you will find exceptionally low levels of heavy metals and contaminants. So being that not very much can be said about their processes due to their patent, their research and clinical studies are widely available to the public, and based off of their reviews, people seem to love Choq Shilajit capsules.

As for how their website stands now, it is a very extensive and informational ground of work. They don’t just offer products and hope that the consumer will make a decision. Instead, they provide a vast archive of information about shilajit, how one should utilize it, about it’s chemical composition and much more. The education that they provide on shilajit says a lot about the kinds of intentions that they have in mind for the public.

Pure Himalayan Shilajit Variety

Shilajit Resin

Soft Resin Shilajit

Soft resin shilajit is the original shilajit resin. It is believed to be more concentrated with trace minerals than liquid shilajit. It is a smooth, waxy paste with a consistency like honey. In the palm of your hand it becomes loose and sticky, while if kept in cooler temperatures like in a refrigerator, it becomes brittle and is able to snap. Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin is sourced from the Himalayan mountains in India, from a little place called Himachal Pradesh. Pure Himalayan Shilajit also offers  Standard Pure Shilajit Resin, a shilajit resin sourced from the Altai mountains of Russia and Mongolia. While it is considered to be 5%-10% less potent than Himalayan Shilajit it still densely nutritious  and the best value on a dollar spent.

Shangrila Shilajit

Shangrila Shilajit is a special resin recipe that outperforms traditionally made extracts as it combines the benefits of two powerful superfoods. There are many ancient recipes on how to purify shilajit that don’t include just plain water. Lots of these recipes include different herbs and berries to improve shilajit taste and potency. Shangrila Shilajit is one of those recipes that conjugates pure Himalayan shilajit with the healthy nutritional sweetener UMF20+ Manuka Honey sourced from New Zealand.  Greater benefits with greater taste.

Shilajit Liquid Drops

Liquid Shilajit Drops

Shilajit liquid resembles a darker, shiner version of hemp oil. This form of shilajit is considered by Pure Himalayan Shilajit as the freshest form possible due to it being produced in limited quantities because of delicate processing. A top grade shilajit harvested from the Gilgit Baltistan area of the Himalayas with a consistency of a semi-thick fluid. It is easy to use if stored properly. It is advised to be kept stored in cool temperatures as in a refrigerator.  It can be taken directly as is or added to a favorite drink, hot or cold. Pure Himalayan Shilajit also offers Sun Dried Liquid Shilajit which goes through a slightly different process than regular liquid shilajit and is sourced from a Pakistan region of the Himalayan mountains.

Shilajit Powder

This form of shilajit has gone through a degree of refinement such as freeze drying to make it  a powder. In reality, it is difficult to find a reliable source of shilajit powder. More than 90% of shilajit powder available on the market is either poorly made through being overly heated or is simply just a counterfeit product made by throwing together some humic substances, minerals and fulvic acid. Nevertheless, a well made and properly purified shilajit powder provides those same benefits that shilajit resin beholds. Some might even argue that it is more concentrated than it’s solid form. Sourced from the Himachal Pradesh region of the Himalayan mountains in India this form contains no fillers or additives of any kind and can last a very long time in storage if kept away from heat, oxygen and sunlight.

Pure Shilajit Tablets

Shilajit tablets are made from shilajit powder where the powder is pressed into the form of tablets. Pure Himalayan Shilajit “drops” are another type of tablets where solid shilajit has been measured out and pressed into little tablets ready for consumption. Something that should be kept in mind is that shilajit tablets could contain binders and fillers as additives to help the product contain it’s form. Pure Himalayan Shilajit has yet to clarify whether this product of theirs contains any additives.
